Portraiture in Poser

Poser has predominantly been used to render people and many users are still in search of that perfect portrait!  This week the Pulse shares some of our tips with you but the most important factor in a great 3D portrait is to start with an exceptional skin texture.  So, this week you can find Famille de Femmes - Morphs and Materials for La Femme by RPublishing and fabiana at 50% off until Wednesday, April 6th 9:59 am (cdt).

Most portraits focus on the face and shoulders which means facial features will need extra attention.

Although your character's gaze can be off to the side, up or down, it is always more engaging to the viewer when there is direct eye contact with the camera.

As for cameras, don't forget that Poser has a Face Camera which works best for portraits.   You can, of course, customize it but even the default Face Camera will give better results than the Main or other cameras.

Besides the eyes there can be other facial features that would make for a more stunning portrait i.e. the lips, a beauty mark, etc.  Details such as jewelry or bangs framing a face will also create more of an impact.

Lighting can also make or break a portrait and depending on the mood or atmosphere you are going for you should experiment with various types of lighting.  Fortunately, there are some wonderful products especially for portraits with many options for lighting which will be linked below.

It's best to keep your background minimal as this will make your portrait more striking.  You don't want the viewer to get lost in a background with many details.   They will only detract from the impact of your character.

Finally, for added realism you can't go wrong by adding Depth of Field.  Just make sure your focal point is the face or even just the eyes.  In the portrait above La Femme is slightly turned and it is her left eye that is the focal point.  The addition of a touch of uniform noise may also contribute to realism especially in a Black and White portrait but that is also a matter of personal taste.  Most important of all is to remember that rules can and sometimes should be broken!  So, go ahead, experiment and have fun!
