How to Op-Out of Adobe Photoshop's Personal Data Gathering

Jan 24, 2023 at 04:45 pm by gToon

It seems like every other article in the news is about AI (artificial intelligence) and data gathering. Artists and creators are especially worried about their work being used without their permission as part of large data sets. That's why we were surprised to read in a recent Twitter post by Krita, that Adobe automatically moves the switch to the on (yes) position in the Photoshop preference settings to, "Allow my content to be used by Adobe for content improvement and development purposes".

It's odd that Adobe would, by default, leave this switch to ON given the recent lawsuit filed against several AI-Generating sites. But even without the concerns by many artists over the use of their work without permission, that switch should be at the OFF position.

It's a simple matter to go into the preferences section of Adobe Photoshop and find the Content section and turn the switch to the OFF positing (right).

Adobe has issued a statement that "Adobe does not use any data stored on customers’ Creative Cloud accounts to train its experimental Generative AI features."

We are not at all sure that this very precise legal language is enough though. Maybe they are just covering themselves in case of a legal challenge in the future. If you are not convinced by Adobe's statements, then opt out of Adobe's data-gathering in Photoshop. If you are fine with them using your data then leave the switch to the default position.

However, we think it would be better if Adobe allowed the user to decide the default preferences when the program is first installed since many users hardly ever change their preferences in the program.
