Renderosity has been running contests for as far back as I can remember (15 years). The goal is to encourage innovation, promote various aspects of Renderosity's content and give away cool prizes. Renderosity staff works every week to come up with interesting challenges for the community members.
The main source of information on past, current, and open contests is the contest's homepage which you can access here (and from the Community page on the main website. On this page, you can see what contests are currently open (accepting submissions). By clicking on this link, you'll see what the contest is, the requirements to enter, the deadline for submissions, and the closing date. You'll also discover what prizes are on offer. The staff does an excellent job of finding worthy prizes for the winners (they usually choose the top 3 winners). Prizes include perks at Renderosity like a $100 gift certificate, a complete Poser 13 package, and free membership in Renderosity Prime.
The subject of Renderosity contests varies from month to month. For example, the current contest running (as of May 27th) is the Writer's Contest. It has an open theme, so the writer can choose their own theme. There are general requirements for any specific contest, but they are usually not too onerous. The Writer's Contest, for example, allows you to submit up to 3 entries but bans nudity or obscenity along with other basic requirements. The contest comes with rules for submission, too. The size (or length as in the Writer's Contest) of the image you are submitting, image formats, terms of service rules, etc. Again, these are simple requirements that the great majority of members will be able to abide by.
The contest page also lists the prizes for the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place entries. These are always juicy and fun. But there's an additional prize that isn't mentioned - the esteem of other Renderosity members and the promotion of your work. These are intangible, but significant benefits to placing in the top 3 of any Renderosity contest
Some recently closed contests include the Poser 13 Renders contest, The Pin-Up Contest (one of my favorites and usually quite competitive), the Holiday contest, and a very big Halloween Contest which includes multiple sections like writing, photography, and animation.
Deadlines for submitting to a contest are usually generous (often several months) and the contest winners are usually determined quickly so you don't have to wait too long to find out if you've won. The Renderosity staff judges each contest and I can tell you that they take the work seriously, but with a dose of fun, too.
And while we are talking about the staff, they also make quite an effort to come up with new and interesting contests. I was quite intrigued with the Film Noir Contest which closed several months ago. It's a shame that Renderosity staff can't enter any contest. I sure wanted to enter that one. But it's important for the integrity of the contests to exclude staff :-)
Finally, from the Contests homepage, you can easily check on other contests that have closed and see who won or check on upcoming contests that you might consider entering. It's a pretty neat page with lots of info.
