Renderosity Updated Policy for AI Images in Galleries

Feb 08, 2024 at 12:00 pm by tim

Recently we closed the galleries and forums on Renderosity dedicated to generative AI images.  This was partially due to concerns about AI algorithms that train on copyrighted works without compensation for the artists.  It was also partially due to community factors where we assign Render Rewards to members for posting to the galleries.  Since it is possible to create many AI images and post them in the galleries with little or no artistic effort, this lead to the galleries being flooded with AI images and unhappy 3D artists whose work was buried.

Also, at the same time we announced a broad ban on AI generated images in all of the galleries.  In retrospect, this was short-sighted as the AI wave is much bigger than Renderosity and the use of AI as part of a digital artist’s toolset is just a reality in today’s world.

So, we have decided to leave the AI Art galleries and forums closed.  Instead, our moderators will allow AI images in the galleries where the appropriate sections/genres are provided, and AI is one part of the artist’s creative process.  Note this will often require the artist to post a note with their image explaining their process and toolset.  AI images posted without explanation will be removed by our moderation team.

Our thanks to the community for all your feedback on this.  It always makes us better.

A touchy subject in today's world for sure, .AI can be useful, But I fully understand Renderosity's concern. Aside from Renderosity losing money by rewarding perks to members posting AI image after AI image to their Gallery , Renderosity and it's vendor Artist make no sales from AI generated Images Which I could foresee that making a Huge negative impact on the future of this wonderful community of artist. But boy oh boy is it getting hard to compete with AI artistic programs. They do produce some EYE catching Images ! Peace !
I love playing with Wombo (which seems the easiest and least expensive) prompt-to-picture generator, and some of the output is uncannily interesting visually. I also have a desire to share some of those pictures with others. However, I agree that one can generate many, many pictures with very little effort. I can generate 12 pictures in a few minutes, whereas it might take two days to produce a good picture in Poser or Vue.
AI art is here to stay trying to ignore it or completely disassociate from those using it ,is a fools gambit
I feel Ai art has it’s place, just not here or anywhere else where 3D art is the main subject. I’m sure there are plenty of other places to show off Ai art. It’s very tough competitor indeed, Ai that is, not the prompter obviously, they are just the client, Ai is the artist. I’m also using Ai btw but not to create my art. We all know it’s already far too late, Ai art is here to stay and will wipe out 3D in the near future. It doesn’t matter that artists are warning people about the negative impact it has on the industry. Creating Art with Ai is as easy as heating your microwave dinner and people were craving for something like this.
May I suggest 2 things: 1) Set a limit on the rate of posting so that Renderosity galleries are not flooded with AI generated images and Renderosity is not hemorrhaging perks. 2) Have separate galleries for each program used to create images (Poser Animals, DAZ Animals, Vue Animals, AI Animals, etc...) This would allow viewers to compare images created by different programs to help them decide which program would best fit their own talents and artistic goals and to find images created by some specific program of interest.
