The Renderosity community was, once again, given the vote for Artist of the Month, for May, 2025. After a very close vote the winner turned out to be Germany’s Torolon, known to his friends and family as Ralf Trautwein.
Ever since his days as a youth, he has always been interested in graphics, whether as an artist using handmade paper and pastels, or as a graphic designer creating posters for exhibitions. It was through these activities he was introduced to relevant design software applications.
Q&A with Torolon
What was the process from getting an initial feel for the tools and software for design to creating images you were pleased with and wanted to share with others?
I started with simple animations, which I then refined and added details until I was satisfied. This process continues to this day.
What were the first programs and tools you used to create your art and what have you graduated into now?
I started with Cinema 4D. However, since I wanted to create animations, this software was too complex for me. That's how I came to Poser and Vue.
Where do you find your inspiration?
You just have to look around. For me, it's enough to see figures, places, or characters to develop a story. The stories are lying on the street, waiting to be told.
What’s the most important tool you use for your work now and why?
Poser and Vue. These allow you to create sophisticated animations even as a solo artist.
Your images are so artistic. Did you create other kinds of art before getting into digital art?
I used to create mixed-media paintings on handmade paper and show them in various exhibitions. Then I wanted to focus more on new media.
How has your own work changed over the years? Where do you think it’s headed?
I could imagine telling new stories with new AI and animation software. I'd also like to do this with other people.
If you could have dinner with any artist, living or dead, who would it be and why?
Peter Jackson
What are your favorite subjects? What do you really get immersed in?
Fantasy, fiction, astronomy, and stories.
Have you had any kind of life experience that drives your focus in your artwork?
I think my own life experiences in general influence my work.
Is or are there other artists that influence you, or do you have a mentor that has helped at any point?
J. R. R. Tolkien.
What ideas do you have for future projects?
Season one will be followed by a second.
What tips do you have for those who are just getting started in 3D artwork?
Persevere, even if you fail.
