I was inspired by the old slasher movies (e.g. Carrie (1976), Halloween 1978), Prom Night (1980), etc.) to use the setting and the young girl. A lot of movies have been set in, old hospitals, asylums, derelict buildings etc. so I decided to tap into that but to differentiate between the old and new movies by using a brand new shiny knife.
