Entry #8

Santa's Helper

Santa sits in North Pole Town,

Drinking the blood red wine

‘O where will I get a skillful one

To fly this sleigh of mine?’

Up and spoke an elder elf,

Caught Santa's woeful eye;

‘Rudolph is the best team lead

That ever one saw fly.’

Santa has written a hurried note

And sealed it with his hand,

And sent it fast to good Rudolph,

Was flying o'er the land.

‘On Christmas soon, On Christmas soon

That day when snows do swirl;

Santa's gifts to children all,

You must fly round the world.’

The first words that good Rudolph read

He laughed as he flew by;

The next words that good Rudolph read

A tear blinded his eye.

‘O who has told this tale of me

That gave the idea birth,

To send us out this time of year,

To fly around the earth?

‘If rain, if snow, if hail, if blow,

Our sleigh must sail the sky.

Santa's gifts to little ones,

To bring them we must fly’

So Rudolph found his charging gear

and plugged it in all night;

Then watched the meter rise right up

Until his nose glowed bright.

‘Make ready, make ready, my merry team

Our good sleigh flies the morn.’

But Santa said with heavy heart,

'I fear a deadly storm.’

‘I saw the new moon yesterday

With the old moon in her arm

And if we fly today, Rudolph,

I fear we'll come to harm.’

They had not flown a league, a league,

A league but barely three,

When the sky grew dark, an the wind blew loud

And stormy grew the sea.

The snow and sleet blew hard on them,

It was such a deadly storm.

The ice built all around the team

But the nose stayed bright and warm.

And long, long did the children sleep

With good dreams in their heads,

And finally Christmas morn did come

They leaped out of their beds.

And found the gifts that Santa brought

That happy Christmas day,

And Rudolph with his nose so bright

Flew happily away.
