Entry #27

I arrived at the spot where the priestess told me my dead sister had died in her struggle with the Archlich Mage, Acererak. My heart swelled with grief and joy at the sight of her. I had to work quickly though because she had already began to decay. Her corpse was now host to scavenging Cavern Arachnids that claimed her as their own. She was still beautiful in death as she was in life.

I stepped off the dweomered flying carpet that allowed me to travel such great distances to the mouth of the caverns in a short time while also helping me traverse the deep expanses of its depths quickly. I took out one of the Skulls of Mictlantecuhtli and began the series of somatic and verbal components needed to activate the Skull's powers. The summoning powers of the Skull would bring my dearly beloved twin back to her body and once she has returned I can attend to her broken body until she regains her health.

The incantations and spell weaving was a success. Mictlantecuhtli's Death Skull hovered into the air next to my fallen twin and began to glow with an eerie orange light. The might of its magicks worked and the spell of Raising worked. But something was wrong. The spirit that used my sister's corpse as the gate back to this Prime Material Plane looked like her but yet was not her. She, IT, was malevolent and evil. Not my loving sister at all. I could feel her maligned presence materialize in this cavernous tomb.

To my horror, I could not control the Banshee as she entered this plane against her will.

"Foolish sister, you have disturbed my peaceful slumber from the depths of Thanatos. Now you will join me - forever..."

The Groaning Spirit emitted a piercing otherworldly shriek that penetrated me to my soul and it felt like my life was being ripped from the anchor of my body - and it was... The discordant music of her wail was horrifying and powerful at the same time. I could feel my life ending as I convulsed and shimmied my death dance to the song of my slain sister. The satchel containing the Skulls slipped from my slackened shoulders and spilled out on to the cavern ground beside me. My life was gone before I even felt the sensation of my body crumpling and collapsing against the cold stones of the Undercairns. My last thoughts were of joy and relief now that I was reunited with my other half just before I lay forever stilled on the stones of the Undercairns. The Skulls of Mictlantecuhtli lay scattered next to my body for other enterprising adventurers to collect as treasures for braving the depths of these deep dungeons.

This was an actual adventure from my Advanced Dungeons & Dragons days in the 1980's with friends learning how to play their characters. We were a dark little macabre group back then.

The scene has V4 characters in it along with a Cavern prop background constructed by a custom made Perl program I made that creates random OBJs for 3D use.
