2024 Writers Halloween Contest

A Halloween for everyone

Entry #14

Today is Halloween...

Jenny had just moved to the city, she was in her first year of college and had a lot of plans. She had decided to take a walk that morning to explore the city and settle in a bit. After visiting quaint streets, a museum, and a few stores, she entered a miscellaneous goods store that intrigued her. The owners were strange, looking like somewhat fanatical hippies. They offered her a taste of a herbal tea, she drank and shortly afterwards everything became a blur....   When she woke up she was in a bed, in a strange structure, she struggled to get up and went out into the hallway: there were many people, they looked like mentally ill people staring into space: an asylum? She could barely move, she was weak, they had definitely drugged her. She had to escape from there as soon as possible! The windows had bars and there were guards coming and going. Why had they taken her there, what did they think to do to her? She tried to reach the door, but an attendant grabbed her, dragged her back and tied her to the bed. “You have to be good, you won't escape from here anyway.” He told her “Tonight is Halloween night and you have been chosen for the sacrifice”

“Sacrifice? Do you want to kill me?”

”That's why you are here, all of you: you will all be sacrificed to Satan, sooner or later, but you must feel honored: the Halloween sacrifice is the most important of the year!” Having said that, he left, telling her that she was free to scream and cry if she wanted to, since outside the facility looked like an asylum and no one would come to save her: crazy people always scream.  How could she save herself? She had only one chance: her twin sister Melanie, who had stayed at home. Since childhood they had a special bond: they felt each other's pain or fear and sometimes could have real visions of what was happening. She thought of her sister, tried to perceive her mind to convey something to her. She hoped Melanie could sense it.
Hours passed, Jenny was more and more terrified, until darkness fell and they came to get her for the sacrifice. They took her to a basement and tied her to an altar, she tried to wriggle out, but there were too many of them and there was no way. They started reciting formulas in Latin that she did not understand: the only word she could understand was Satan, whom they invoked in a loud voice.

The hooded priest approached, raised a ritual dagger above her. Jenny screamed, calling for help with all the breath she had. The man lowered the dagger.... But before he could hit her, the sound of a gunshot.... The hooded figure collapsed to the ground. “Police! Don't move! You are all under arrest!”  At that moment they were the most beautiful words Jenny had ever heard....
The policemen pinned down and handcuffed those present and led them away: about 30 people in tunics and hoods. Then they freed her and helped her up, and finally she saw Melanie behind them, coming toward her. She wept in her sister's arms and asked her, “Did you bring them here?” “Of course,” Melanie replied, “I heard you. I could see where I had to go, it was like I'd been there before, but I told them a story or they wouldn't believe me,” she added in a whisper. “What did you tell them?” Jenny asked.
Later at the police station, the officer asked her, “Miss Melanie told us that you called her on a cell phone for help.... What I don't understand is: how did you do it if you were tied up?”
“Oh,well, this is a long story...” She replied.
