Stephanie finished the call with her boyfriend and took in a relieved deep breath with the realization that the surprise wasn't too badly ruined because of the storm and glad that he would be waiting at home or close to it when she arrived. She rummaged through her purse to find her lipstick and perfume, found them and reapplied the lipstick to its glossy sheen and modestly spritzed the fragrance her lover found irresistible on her neck back to its original alluring freshness. Thoughts of romantic seduction and the anticipation of carnal couplings to come filled the young woman's mind making her oblivious to the dangers that waited just beyond her senses.
Specimen 36, was attracted to the underpass entry by the particularly strong thunderstorm playing out over the locale. As it approached the cylindrical drain tunnel it detected a uniquely peculiar scent. The smell caused the genetically engineered monstrosity to stop and analyze the new stimuli overtaking its strong olfactory senses. The spoor was unique, pungent but not overwhelming so. At it's base however came the scent of something primally familiar, something that initiated its biological directive to feed, the scent of blood and flesh. The scent of prey.
The memory of the stimuli was not unlike the first time it bit into the flesh of the much larger organism that invaded the sanctuary of its home in the laboratory. The probing digits of the offending organism drew back its injured flesh once the poison in its bite amplified the pain of its rapid fang strike. The Specimen was tiny then, but its will to survive and fearless nature belied it's small form. Specimen 36 was now no longer small, and after surreptitiously escaping the confines of the laboratory, its genesis home, its appetite to feed and reproduce grew with its expanding girth along with its predatory cunning and indomitability. Now the Specimen was the queen of its environment. It was an alpha predator that would not be denied in the hunting grounds of its own domicile, and it was hungry. The Specimen crept menacingly around the strange object separating it from its prey and when it revealed itself, the prey emitted a piercingly shrill sound when she realized she was not alone. The crashing thunderstorm drowned out the prey's terrorized screams while the pouncing beast sank it's fangs into the prey's soft and flavorful torso flesh. The neurotoxin flowed quickly into its food and it retracted its hardened teeth as quickly as it inserted them.
"AAIIIEEE!!! SOMEBODY HELP ME! OH MY G-"
Stephanie's shrieks were heard by no one other than Specimen 36. Her thoughts of intimate romantic liaisons with her boyfriend were quickly replaced by fearful notions and the sudden fragility of her mortality. She could not finish her exclamation when the paralytic poison of the Specimen entered her body and instantly set her musculature into a paralyzed rigor that was not unlike being frozen. Stephanie's mind raced incoherently while the only biological functions that seemed to work were her frantically beating heart and autonomic necessity to breathe. Her body collapsed backward into the open door of her car and slid rigidly on to the ground still clasping the phone in her hand. If only she could speed dial her lover, he was so close but still might as well been five hours away.
Satisfied with the sumptuousness of its prey, Specimen 36 hoisted the paralyzed prey on to its back effortlessly. The architecture of the monstrous arachnid allows the Specimen to leverage more weight, strength and power than its body seems capable, comparable to its mundane spider ancestry. Stephanie could do nothing as her feminine form was now just a sack of meal splayed on to the back of its captor. The Specimen hurried deftly with its prize to the drain pipe entrance and disappeared with her into its den. It was time to dine and prepare for the next steps of its biological imperatives...
