Halloween Surprise - Part 3

The Specimen suckled blissfully on the prey's corpse, Stephanie's now slackened remains provided a bounty of flavorful sustenance which the monstrous arachnid supped upon most greedily. Thunder and lightning rumbled and flashed with the staccato of heavy rains served as nature's musical background that soothed the Specimen's being while it drank in Stephanie's liquifying internals. The multipurpose poison of the Specimen both paralyzed its prey and slowly transformed a prey's internal organ tissue into the chyme that is easily digestible for the altered arachnid. The R&D labs that altered the Specimen's genetics needed a predator that could take on the growing population of invasive insect species that threatened the state's economic and agricultural industries. Their escaped creation grew into this highly adaptable and horrific organism which had evolutionary consequences that the scientists who created it never predicted. Now that Specimen 36 has tasted its first bounty of human flesh it has decided that the flavor of her flesh was delectably enjoyable. The Specimen reveled in the delightful taste of Stephanie's body, a now preferable taste for human that was easily acquired from Stephanie's nutritious remains.

The lull of the nighttime feeding was suddenly interrupted by the object that Stephanie clasped in life now fallen to the ground from her inverted web anchored corpse. An insistent and sudden ringing tone accompanied by a bright pattern of lights emanated from the object and lit the den of the Specimen dimly causing the Specimen to instinctually disengage from the feeding hole on the prey's torso and take a defensive stance behind the prey's remains in case an organism dare to invade its home. For a few moments the annoying object brazenly chirped and pulsed its piercing lights, then as suddenly as it came to life, the behaviors of this strange object suddenly stopped.

"*BEEP* Hi! You've reached me at a rare moment I can't answer the phone but leave a message and I'll get right back to you, Thanks! *BEEP* "

"Hey honey, it's me, I think this is the first time I've ever reached your voicemail but where the heck are ya? I sat down on the couch when I came back from the party setup last night and waited up for you. It's not like you to just ditch me, is something wrong? Did you get cold feet for the weekend? Well it's 9 A.M. and you're not here. Sorry babe, I must have dozed off around 5 in the morning but I am worried that you got lost or - something. I even called up your bestie Veronica and she doesn't know where you are so call me as soon as you can, I'm worried sick about you, honeysuckle. Oh! Veronica confirmed she'll be coming tonight too and she's going to drive the route you came up and is probably in your area or soon will be so keep an eye on your phone. Love you bye!"

*35 minutes later*

"Hey Rick, it's Veronica - I found Stephy's car under Spirney Rd in an underpass. Except no Stephy, there's a large drainpipe next to her car and I am going to check it. I've got a hinky feeling about this, I think you should call the police..."

"Will do Veronica and thanks, I hope Stephy sheltered somewhere from the storm and maybe she's tucked away in that pipe. I know exactly where that is and it is an hour from me."

"Yeah that's what I'm thinking too."

"I'll wait to call the police until after you check the pipe. If she isn't in there somewhere I'll get a hold of the county sheriff let me know what you find."

"Ok I'll let you know what I find, gosh I hope she's alright"

"Me too and thanks again Veronica, I'm worried sick."

"No worries, she's my bestie too and she's going to get an earful when I find her, just hope we don't have to involve any emergency personnel - wish me luck, see you soon."

"Thanks again V- and good luck."

Veronica parked closer to her bestie's abandoned convertible and walked over to the drainpipe behind that led into darkness. Trickling water could be heard in the distance and a strange smell from the pipe made Veronica slightly gag. Veronica doubted her best friend would go into a strange drainage pipe to escape the weather especially if she could shelter from the rain in her car under a bridge. She owed it to her as her best friend though to watch out for her and so she knelt next to the open pipe and called out into the dark pipe.

"Stephy, are you in there? if you are say something!" Her voice bounced and echoed off the concrete tube but garnered no response from her best friend. The drain entrance was big enough for Veronica to crawl into comfortably so she called out again to her friend not knowing that she was now beyond any point of a living response. "Ok I am going into the tube and not exactly dressed to go spelunking but I am coming in anyway, you better be in here!"

The Specimen could sense another organism entering its lair. It pondered what it could be, perhaps another delicious morsel like the one it is dining on has come into its own home. The beast knew the egg sac it finished laying was opening and its offspring will need sustenance. Specimen 36 knew it will have to hunt again and was chillingly delighted that food has come to it. The arachnid legs of the Specimen propelled its body to the entrance and readied itself to pounce once again.

Veronica crawled a few feet into the drainpipe when a scuttling and clacking noise drew her attention down the pipe. Eight glowing piercing eyes stared straight into Veronica's when she lifted her head up from a bent crawling position. She began to draw in a long breath to ululate a terrified scream but the Specimen didn't let her. Specialized limbs latched on to Veronica's feminine form while poison filled fangs dug into Veronica's prone figure. Veronica's quivering body tensed and went rigid before she could unleash her terrified scream. The Specimen was pleased that it had successfully secured yet another fresh portion of meat to fortify and sustain it and its brood of new offspring. Specimen 36 dragged its prize of flesh back toward the earlier prey not knowing that the bonds of friendship existed between its life sustaining prey.
