For sound recording/editing, I think Cool Edit still has a shareware version, also a Pro version which I think is not cheap. I use Sound Forge XP, a cut down version that runs around $40, or better yet bundled with Acid Music as "Sound Anywhere" for about $50. I have Acid Pro which is great for creating music using loops, also pretty good for mixing vocal soundtracks.
