It was on this site, and yes, thats why we had to take disallow linking to HTML pages. People were using it as a means to get traffic through their homepage, and then you had to wade through their entire site to find their downloads. The whole reason the Free Stuff pages are so popular is that they are a one stop place to download items, and you don't have to hunt.
Might we give it a conditional try once again Roy? Granted, nobody has seen or been through all that you have, but with the exception of the few interminable rascals, the community generally seems more mature and pretty cooperative these days. - Just 'splain da rules. - I am constantly astounded at the effects of peer pressure in this community of "strangers". We can always shun any offenders. ('bout time we had another good Community Shunning!) ;-) Serously though, woulda saved Ikyoto's site from being killed and allow a few of the oldtimers to move back in without having to find & build new sites. My download links go to a simple html page with only a single thumb of the download item on it. From there they can link back -- or go to my homepage. Would limiting it to something like that be unacceptable? Thanks for the explanation either way guys. from the outside peering in, -Nance
Fur--is there any way to actually hide a download site (it's usually pretty easy to find a site if you open an image in a new window) I'd like to be able to link to a larger FTP site for remote downloading, but would also like to keep casual viewers from checking out the stuff I keeped stored on that site.
Personally, I like it the way it is and would like to keep it the way that it is. Why? You link your Yahoo.com site to the Freestuff section but after 200 downloads in 8 hours, Yahoo closes you down, or maybe because of the product... either way you get shut down. Links can die faster, sites change because someone can't keep at one place for some reason or another, then that means the Admins and I have to hunt everything down and try to fix it... Or someone links up to a PORNO site that has a bunch of adult banners and pop-ups that will bombard your browser, at home in front of your kids or while you are at work... sure, it may only be a free site for Joe Blow to get free webspace but your kids were in the room, or your boss and you have 20 banners blinking like a neon sign on your desktop..... and then they come to me and complain... Because of this reason, I have to say that the Freestuff section is going to have to stay the way it is. Ed and I personally, spending 17 hours a day working on this site, and we can't afford to add 5 more hours of hunt through them and make sure that everyone is playing by the rules. Sorry, Jack
it is getting like "back to the future" 'round here recently! how are people finding these ancient threads to keep resurrecting? there is some sort of artical-ogical-dig going on 'round here, to find these old Rendo' relics.
i can't even remember what i said yesterday! let alone a conversation from seven years ago!!

Sure would like to be able to put some of my stuff back in FS but it appears the only way to stay on Geo is to avoid direct linking. Gotta hit a page and let'em flash their banner. Just wondering if the "no html links" in FreeStuff was a technical problem or a matter of policy?
