The city was not always this dark. Once the sprawling metropolis in the distance would have lured them with its mesmerizing neon lights dancing against the setting of the night sky. Now it is the black, foreboding smoke escaping from the burning tires at the Sentinel's compound that heralds their arrival. When the loneliness engulfs her like this, the memory of the acrid smell that filled the air that fateful day is reawakened to haunt her thoughts. Everything is dark now. They have learnt to embrace the darkness as one that welcomes a long-lost lover from a sojourn in faraway lands. Even the welcome familiarity of the night brings little solace from the shackles of the cold, steel blue sky that has become intertwined with their lives since its birth three years ago. The younger ones in the camp often clamour to hear tales of the bygone era of electricity. Time and again they are left disappointed. The adults do not want to open the buried memories of the past. Their reality is one of the brooding darkness. It has become a way of life for them. The quicker the children accept it, the better. Communities have come to rely on Arizona and her warriors for so much. Thinking of them helps to galvanise her for the task ahead. While many of their group will fall during the battle, their deaths will not be in vain. The small farming enclaves surrounding this shell of a once thriving city will prosper from the supplies these men and women will sacrifice themselves for. An explosion awakens her from this murky stupor. It has begun. Arizona tightens her grip around the sword and rushes off to join the raid. Chapter One to follow soon!
