The looks depend on what kind of armor you want to do. If its a medieval realistic one no part should bend. The pieces should have open areas to allow movement (the back of the knees, the hip/thights joint, etc) that show the chainmail underneath. I recall medieval armors had movile pieces on the front, back and sides of the hip and bigger kneepads. Of course, if it's a sci-fi armor, it can be as flexible as you want.
