I am trying to boolean two octagons, one to core the other out but it doesn't seem to work. What am i doing wrong?

If youre using the "imported objects" from the objects menu, they for some reason cant be booleaned! But for two objects to intersect, you have to make one positive, the other one negative, and group the two parts together!

Well i did a test and it seems the imported objects wont boolean together... but they seem to boolean fine with primatives. So looks like you could make yourself an octagon out of primatives, then boolean that with your imported octagon mesh.

Also in the Edit, smooth box make sure that "solid while boolean rendering" is checked. The imported objects all boolean just fine.

Do atleast one thing a day that scares the hell outta ya!!

sounds like it might be a bit easier to make your object in another program(there are several freeware modelling programs out there), and importing it into bryce...especially if you have to create your object out of many smaller ones. it helps to keep your scene a little neater.

I tried it after checking the "solid while boolean rendering" in the edit menu and it worked just fine. I've used studio max for more complex meshes, but it seemed pretty straightforward and it something I've done a lot with primitives. thanks clay, and thanks to all respondants.

As a newbie I haven't tried other freeware modeling programs. Can anyone please refer me to one. (I am not sure if I should make a new thread or carry on with this one?)
