Hmm. When it comes right down to it, 'art' or not in the real world is determined by how cool the result is. Artists or artistes can make up all the bullshit definitions they want, but the societal definition requires the work to be 'cool' whether I like it, or you like it, or the creator him/herself likes it or not. This is why Patrick Nagel, Andy Warhol, Pablo Picasso, Roy Lichtenstein, and Vincent Van Gogh will be remembered alongside Leonardo DaVinci, Rembrandt, and Michaelangelo regardless of which of them I like (Lichtenstein, Warhol, Nagel) and which I think are crap (Van Gogh, Picasso). Fantasy art is inherently not cool because it's geeky, thus it hasn't been accepted as real art except among the geeks -- until recently, when the concept of 'Geek Chic' has begun to exist. Among When it comes down to it, whether anyone likes it or not, no matter how many bullshit arguments the artistes and poseurs make to the contrary, art is fashion for your walls.
