On page 163 of the book "Memoirs of a Geisha" a novel by Arthur Golden they describe one of the most popular hairstyle called a "split peach". Swept forelock back, brought the rest up into a large knot like a pincushion. From the back it is split in 2 giving the hairstyle name the "split Peach". The knot is formed by wrapping the hair around a piece of fabric. The fabric is visible in back where the bun is split. The fabric can be any color or design but after a certain point in her life it is always red silk. Men found this hairstyle erotic because of what it would remind them of. :) hope this helps a little, Marge
