If you don't have it, get Susan Kitchen's Real World Bryce. Terrains and procedural materials use fractal formulas and she's the only one around that explains it from what I can see. Also, don't be bashful about posting in the pandromeda MojoWorld board. Ken Musgrave, the creator of MW, programmed the fractal stuff for Bryce and he watches that board pretty closely. Ultrafractal above is one of the best.
