JPG is smaller than BUM only on your HD - once uncompressed into memory the only thing affecting size is the pixel dimension, not dpi, not format. Opening and resaving may have smoothed out a glitch in the file you were having problems with. Using a jpg in place of a bum in a MAT file for P4 often gives the dreaded "long day down the coal mine" look.
