Here's how this ended. The author created a new bump jpeg that was double the dpi (went from 72dpi to 150dpi), but reduced the dimensions by 1/ 2 and that did the trick... really. Now if I can just figure out why the 3DS "science lab" model I bought crashes everytime I try to open it I could die happy. That particular author has failed to respond to any of my emails.
