Short explanation: "The Day the Earth Stood Still" was a great 1950's b&w film starring Michael Rennie as Klaatu with his friend Gort the robot. The saucer they arrive in lands in Washington, D.C. They are on a mission of peace so of course the first thing that happens is that a soldier shoots Klaatu. He winds up living among us incognito and learns more about us. His mission is finally announced to all the leaders of the world. Gort is a peace-keeping robot, and Klaatu has come to tell Earth that it is now technologically advanced enough to be of interest to the intergalactic government. We are too war-like and immature to have the technologies to leave Earth and be allowed to travel around space. If we don't stop making war on each other and learn to live in peace, Gort would be back sometime in the future to turn the Earth into a "burned-out cinder".
