THE PLACE FOR ALL THINGS BRYCE - GOT A PROBLEM? YOU'VE COME TO THE RIGHT PLACE

Subject: how good is bryce?

i just got bryce about 2 weeks ago and it seems to be pretty cool. i was just wondering if it is any good at modeling. does it have and good functions for modeling organics or non-organics. thanks.

take a look at my gallery.. It's 100% bryce

jeffdejong ( ) posted Thu, 23 January 2003 at 3:50 PM

thats great! but can you teach me how to do it

Aldaron ( ) posted Thu, 23 January 2003 at 6:49 PM

Bryce is not a modeler but modeling can be done in it with pratice and patience. Some people have come up with great models but they are not very easy to do, you may have an easier time in another modeling program (Anim8or is free and very good).

I agree with Aldaron. In my opinion, Bryce isn't great at allround modeling (though it defintely does have its moments), but some people (looks at pidjy) get some seriously good models out of it. Wings3d (http://www.wings3d.com) is another very good free modeller out there.

i find it easier to model outside of Bryce, especially if I want to use the model in another program such as Poser.

But by easier, I mean easier to export, etc. Modeling in Bryce is way easier in terms of learning curve than modeling in another app.

Bryce rules apart from its inability to export.

sorry... to me that's like asking "how good is a stick of charcoal?" To some it's something to shovel out of the fireplace and throw out with the trash and in the hand of others can create beautiful works of art. Learn to use Bryce properly (which I'm still working on), and you can do things that even high-end modelling apps can't do.

In my opinion Bryce is professionaly under-rated and Corel needs to re-think Bryce's promotion. Bryce CAN model very well. I use very little else when it comes to modelling. OK, so from time to time I import DXF and 3ds, but you only have to look at several sites from this forum (incluing mine) to see what Bryce can really do. Bryce was originally produced for landscapes (and abstracts) So, modeling in it can be a tricky art of sorts. It can be frustrating, especially with organics. But, then I see what some of these people are doing and it blows me away. AS

Just to add for organics metaballs are great. Take a look at humorix's gallery for some examples and do a search on this forum for dragonriders of pern and character and you'll see some examples of models made with just metaballs. Also check my gallery, "Seadragon's realm" was pure bryce. The seadragon is all metaballs. The boat is pictured above using boolean, terrains, and metaballs for the curved ropes.

Bryce models well but does get complicated when booleans are concerned (see bambam131 for wire frame wonders).metasequioa is my favourite,I more often than not start there and finish in bryce
