The "cable connection" is not "sucking" any memory. The "connection" doesn't use any memory at all. Your data transfer reate (with programs that use the connection) will be increased. You may have to disable your XP firewall settings to let Poser do its thing. People have been using P5 and Windows XP and RoadRunner just fine for a long time. If turning off your firewall doesn't solve it, then you may have found yet another bug in Poser 5.
