While the spotlights won't give a volume appearance, I usually light my figures exclusively with spotlights. They are far from useless, and especially nice for figure studies. You can control exactly where light falls on your figure with spots, something that's not possible with the default lighting. It takes considerably more work, but the results can be very nice. After choosing "point at," use your translate dials to position your light so that it's in front of your figure, and is in the proper location/distance from your subject. Most of the time, I light a figure with 4 or more spotlights - sometimes as many as 8. -sk
