I was thinking, and this is something you'd be better off asking Hawkfyr. I think it's possible, that you could create a lattice that would have the shape of a small bit of foliage you wanted, and then texture it with a foliage mat, then use multireplicate to spread it out around the branches. Hawk is the master of multirep, so I'm sure he'd go and try it and then tell you if it could be done. I'm thinking that might be a good way to get very detailed foliage.
