Subject: apps like Poser?

qoob ( ) posted Mon, 10 March 2003 at 10:27 AM · edited Wed, 27 November 2024 at 9:54 PM

I'm still testing Poser and wondered how long it takes to render just one picture or even a small movie. Now I have to read that Poser doesn't support any 3d-graphic-card. Are there any possibilities to enable the support? If it isn't the case, are there any programs like Poser avialble to create and animate humans as simple as there. If it matters I've a P4 2.53 GHz, 1024 MB DDR-Ram and a Ge-Force 4 Ti-4200 (AGP 8x, 128 MB DDR-Ram). thanks qoob

Um. None of the apps currently on the market really have anything to do with the video card; A video cards job is really just to display stuff on the monitor, nothing else. Poser is the simplist. it's actually pretty unique. All the big time apps (Maya, Lightwave, 3Dstudio, etc) can do figures, but require a LOT more work to get the same output. Lifeforms is great for designing motions...but doesn't really do a graphical output (but it will export those motions to poser, lightwave, etc). All the biggies will import and display Poser stuff, as will vue d'esprit, world builder, etc. So, if you are looking for a program that does what poser does, you are pretty much out of luck. I think.

Are you referring to Poser not supporting DirectX or OpenGL? Poser does not use either.

At the current time, Poser is the only application in this unique market, but that will change with the release of DAZ Studio.

All of my apps like Poser just fine, except for Amorphium, who seems to be jealous. (Sorry, just couldn't resist.)

There are apps that use openGL on the video card such as MojoWorld, etc. My understanding is that the DAZ Studio uses openGL. Poser does not. As for animation apps like Poser that use video card power, the DAZ Studio which is still in development is probably the closest thing. There are apps that render much faster than poser. Electric Image Universe may have the fastest renderer on the market. Check out their render speed comparison test at www.universe3d.com Also, Cinema R8 has a very fast renderer and might be giving EIU a run for the money. 3dMax is also faster than Poser. From what I hear, Cinema may also be compatable with Poser objects moreso than the other apps. Lightwave also has a plugin for Poser 4/PP but I have no idea how fast that renders. There was some talk from CL that Truespace would be moving towards a Poser friendly environment but again, I don't know how fast the renderer in TS is.

from what i read the Daz3D Studio will have 3D hardware acceleration

Rendering has NOTHING to do with the video card; the only thing it does is reduce your screen draw time. When they talk about 3d accelaration, support for video cards, etc, they are talking about how things are brought to your monitor, it doesn't give you any extra horsepower in renders, the computational process of determining what the output image is going to be, based on the information you supplied the software in the form of models, textures, camera position, etc. it would require them to treat the video card as a second processor, which it's not suited to be, and they would have to make the software itself multiprocessor friendly. They CAN make it so that the video card assists in setup, when you are dragging things around the screen, they would update and show faster. I'm possibly wrong, but I really, really, really doubt it.

I would welcome reducing the screen time, myself. ;)
