According to the manual, it gives the texture a softer appearance and it's supposed to be used when you can't achieve a good anti-aliasing with the usual means. It should be disabled unless you have a good reason not to. I have never used it for anything, but it sounds like it might give the effect you are getting if used in the wrong situation.
