You just save the material as and new file.when your n the material editor click on the icon that looks like a floppy disk. I don't know exacty what you mean by the last question. You can toggle fron 3d view to top view. I don't think you can rotate it in the editor you may have to click ok and do it in the program part. Or if your making the terrain from a picture you can rotate the picture by clicking on where it says picture then there is little arrows on the right hand side to rotate it 90 degree steps.
