Don't 'zoom' out but 'truck' your camera instead in the directors camera view. This can be done quickly by holding down the 'E' key and then click and drag down your mouse in the window. And for moving around, hold down the'W' key and click'n'drag your mouse. To 'dolly' your camera around something, hold the 'D' and click'n'drag your mouse. And for zooming in a 'ortho' window view, hold down the 'Z' key and the 'option' (on the Mac,) or 'ALT' key (on the PC,) and then click i nthe window.
