One thing you can do is just temporarily set the Transparent setting to 0 on the offending items. (Be sure to write down or otherwise save the original settings!) This is time-consuming, but is worthwhile if you're doing a long series of adjustments in animation and need to get a better sense of what things look like. It's probably not worthwhile if you just dislike the dots!
