Poser - OFFICIAL F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2024 Nov 29 7:57 am)
Niles, LOL! Well, I will not say never again. But I have tried, and #1 is what stopped me. I know most clothing items do not meet up to #1, but I make a point of tweaking the jp settings in an effort to get the item to conform 90-99% right, when posed. With the MMkids, I could never get the jp settings figured out much passed making the mesh into a conforming figure. Nor have I come across any outfits for the MMkids that seemed to conform very well when the figure is posed. I fear you may be waiting a while on this one.
Poor Niles. I wish someone would take the interest he does in the Milleneum kids. They might get used more if someone produced some additional outfits for them. Meanwhile, I would want: 2) Clothes that have morphs so that they can fit multiple figures, like V2, V3, Stephanie, etc. 5) Clothes that have morphs that make it more functional, such as shirts that unbutton, shoulder straps that move up and down, etc? 6) Clothes that combine easily with other clothes. I wouldn't mind seeing a mini-pack of shirts/blouses, a mini-pack of pants/jeans, a mini-pack of coats/blazers, a mini-pack of skirts, a mini pack of shoes/boots (please, something other than stiletto or platform), so that I could use the blouse from pack a with the skirt from pack d to create a dress; or the shirt from pack a with the pants from pack b to create an outfit or a jumpsuit (depending on the textures). or, as an alternative, packs that grow. So if you create a blouse and shirt outfit, it would be nice if that outfit was compatible in some way with the next issuance of an outfit, which might be a jacket and dress, for example. In other words, mix and match clothes. 4) Clothes where the look of the outfit can be easily changed - via morphs, transmaps, etc. - to create a variety of different styles/looks? 1) Clothing that fits right, needing very little if any tweaking of dials to hide poke thru when the base figure is posed? (Even if it means a trade off of number 2)? 7) You knew this was coming....some real life clothes and footware. 3) As for the characters; well, the usual suspects, I suppose. I'd rather have clothes for the more commonly used characters than a very specialized issue, but that's just me. On the other hand, I'd like more variety of sizes and shapes (which is why I rate morphing abilities so high). 7) Rather not have clothes that require me to use the Tailor or outside software to use them.
Clothing for sitting, kneeling (etc.) people. Usually the clothing is nice as long as the character is standing.
How does this sound: Clothing that is fast and easy to use Clothing that is easily poseable and drapeable in real time Clothing that can be easily made to fit, or automatically resizes to fit morphed figures Clothing that can have its fit to a figure easily customized Clothing that can fit and be used with more than one figure Clothing that drapes realistically with gravity and collision effects and looks good Clothing whose shape can be altered using transmaps or some other easy to use method Clothing whose behavior can be changed from silk to denim without the aid of a rocket scientist Zippers, buttons, ties, pockets and other real clothing features
Here's my list: #1: Clothes that have morphs so that they can fit multiple figures, like V2, V3, Stephanie, etc. #2: Average person clothing. Stuff that you might actually see people on the street wearing (blouses and shirts that go all the way to the waist, loose pants, business suits, overalls, winter jackets, moccassins, etc.) (tied for #2) #2: Clothes where the look of the outfit can be easily changed - via morphs, transmaps, etc. - to create a variety of different styles/looks? #3: Clothes that have morphs that make it more functional, such as shirts that unbutton, shoulder straps that move up and down, etc? (tied for #3) #3: Clothing that fits right, needing very little if any tweaking of dials to hide poke thru when the base figure is posed? (Even if it means a trade off of number 2)?
Okay, I am saving this thread for reference. If others post more comments, I will save those too. Eventually, I will try to sort this into groups that seem to reflect the idea being suggested, and then try to put those groups in some order of preference. This kind of feedback will really help me to better understand the kinds of Poser clothing folks really want to see. Thanks you so much to all who took a moment to participate. I assure you your time spent was not wasted. As much as is possible, and practical to do so, on a case by case basis, I will draw on these suggestions when contemplating making future Poser clothing items. Rob
Gee, I do a lot of this stuff in my clothing, don't the other guys? ;-) Most versatile garment I ever made was the drsss in the Vickie Essentials set, there are something like 24 combinations of lengths, necklines and arm treatments, nothing done with trans-maps either, each option has a actual materal and a edge that is made visable when it is used. Almost drove me crazy figuring how to work it (some of them overlap). I haven't done anything quite like that since but I always try to work out an option or two on everything I make, even if it is only a "low-cut" morph. The downside of have super versatile fits-everybody garments is there is a limit to what you can do, joint parameters work on the un-morphed shapes, bear in mind, and you can put more time in doing morphs than doing everything else to make a garment. No way I'm going to do more than 6 or 8 V3 Full Body morphs in clothing to fit her, plus another version in the same box to fit Glamorous Vickie, who doesn't need any! There are something like 10-zillion V3 morphs, if had morphs to fit even half of them I could only do one garment a year, and it would have to cost so much nobody would buy it, thus driving me to the poor-house! I'd suggest though, if you buy stuff that isn't as you like, let the guy who made it know.
Hi Jim, I think you bring a balanced perspective to this. In the end, I know I will be forced to accept certain realities, and that many of the features listed here call for trade off, and can not all be had in one outfit. I have a certain vision as to what I want to see in Poser clothing, mainly clothing that functions more like its real world counterpart. To achieve this, I know I am going to be faced with some real limitations in Poser, many that will involve making trade offs, like what you stated in the trade off between jp settings and morphed mesh. This poll is an effort to help me put my idea of what I want in Poser clothing in perspective with what others are looking for - knowing all along that this would be diversed and impossible list to fullfil in every case, but hoping that it could at least give me some guidelines to consider. Thanks for your imput. I suppose we all have our Poser heroes, those we consider to be trail-blazers and Poser pioneers - or at least generous in giving back to the community by benefit of their experience - who we greatly admire and respect as a result. You have always been so to me. Thanks, Rob
I'm tired of clothes for Poser. I need some for myself. Sigh. I don't want clothes to fit every figure out there at once, but I sure appreciate when they fit Aiko and that factors a lot into my buying decisions. Some of the 'top' clothing makers don't seem to know she even exists. But overall I'd like to see more loose clothes. We have an overabundance of tight fitting clothes methinks. I love the SecondSkin series for V3! I like being able to pose her with impunity, but I'd also like capes and shawls and loose baggy tops and skirts to mix and match with the skins. The Mystics at DAZ is a great example. More please!
Rob, this is an excellent poll, great idea! I'd like to cast my vote for more loose clothing, naturally fantasy or historically based. ;-)

From what I've heard, the Tailor does a decent job on the morphs. Fitting multiple dissimilar characters sounds difficult, though perhaps not impossible. In one way or another, those areas have some representation, What is not represented very well at all from what I've seen is exactly what you say you're interested in, clothing that behaves like it's real world counterparts. So, you want to do it, it's certainly not saturating the market at present, people would love it - sounds like a no-brainer to me. You've already proven with the Gypsy Rose set that you have a knack for this so...

Hi lmckenzie, thanks for the vote of confidence. I plan to do more in the GR line. This will mean a trade off in some of these other areas, because the time involved in making up many morphs makes doing other things impractical. Plus there are the limits imposed by Poser when dealing with morphed mesh. Now about Tailor. Overall, I like Tailor. However, I can say that I do not always get good morphs on some mesh. I don't know exactly what causes this, but I presume it has to do with how the polygons in one mesh compare to another. Maybe someone else can explain this better.
That makes sense, not having the right number of polygons in the right places would probably limit how effectively you're going to be able to match the chest area of a blouse, for instance to a figure's breast morphs. I'm sure you probably run into the same limits doing the morphs manually. Glad to hear you're still looking at expanding the GR line. I still haven't explored all the options on the existing outfit. And I still, look forward to the "super blouse."

Well since my name was brought up in this thread I guess I should or actually need to say something. Most of what everybody wants is actually doable IMHO.... but it takes a lot of work to get things like this to work. The baggy, loose fitting clothing is a real pain in the a** to get to work. I've found that they are really hard to get right without a whole bunch of morphs to compensate for the Poser's limitations... especially V3 clothing since her joints and groups are so different from the other models. I have been working on a set of real loose, baggy t-shirts, sweat shirts and sweat pants for Mike, Vic 2 and 3 and Steph.... Right now they seem to be more work than they are worth.... Guess maybe I don't know enough about joints or I just don't model them right to work like I envised. Ed

Heya, looking for some feedback. What sort of features would be more important to have with the Poser Clothing? 1) Clothing that fits right, needing very little if any tweaking of dials to hide poke thru when the base figure is posed? (Even if it means a trade off of number 2)? 2) Clothes that have morphs so that they can fit multiple figures, like V2, V3, Stephanie, etc. (But at a trade off that this will limit some of what is possible on number 1?) 3) Clothes mainly for.....(name of figure)? 4) Clothes where the look of the outfit can be easily changed - via morphs, transmaps, etc. - to create a variety of different styles/looks? 5) Clothes that have morphs that make it more functional, such as shirts that unbutton, shoulder straps that move up and down, etc? Since Poser has limits, a certain amount of give and take is required in trying to obtain any of these in combination. So I am curious, what of the above is more important to you and what is least. If you can relist them in the order you prefer, that would even be better. i.e. 5,1,2,4,3(name) Thanks, Rob
