Copy > paste as new layer> Select load selection, fill solid white 100% select inverse fill 100% solid black. Mask is done. Copy all paste as new image. Select white part again. Now the tricky part. Find red or leaf colors that represent the leaf well. Fill the white part with this new color on the original image. Say it's a fall leaf so you would fill it a slightly red color.
