Subject: Applying a texture with a transparent background?

maclean ( ) posted Tue, 20 May 2003 at 7:14 PM · edited Sun, 01 December 2024 at 4:14 AM

OK. I admit it. I'm stumped. I've made windows with shutters, and as an alternative to the slats, I put panels in the shutters with their own material, thinking that it would be handy to apply a solid wood tex, instead of the slats. So far, so good. But one of the things I would have liked to add was a mesh, like a screen door type effect. I've made the mesh, but the problem is, if I use a jpeg, I don't see through the mesh, because of course, it has a white background. So, I messed around with gifs, then made a psd with a transparent background by cutting out all the white pixels. But it still shows up in poser as a mesh on white. I want to see through the dratted thing. Any ideas, anyone? mac

I think I must be missing something here. Why can't you use a normal transparency map?

Don't 'cha need a black background? Or is the 'screen' black also?

maclean ( ) posted Tue, 20 May 2003 at 7:34 PM

DOH!!!! Dammit, ajax! That is sooo obvious and sooo correct! I must be in need of a check-up. I have no idea why I didn't just apply a trans map. I was so fixated with the idea of it being a texture, it just didn't filter through to my sorry excuse for a brain. Well, it's too late to head for the coffee-pot now, but tomorrow I'll have a double-ration. What a dummy! LOL. mac

LOL. If only all problems were that easy to solve :-)

Ajax is right, use a transparency map. Apply the above JPEG to a Poser square as a trans map, set the Transparency Min and Max to 100%, you will get the idea. The black parts come out transparent, the white opaque, and grey somewhere inbetween.

Here it is. Took all of 5 seconds to invert the tex. I don't know what came over me. les, thanks. It's not that I don't know how to use transmaps. I just came over all 'blonde' for a while. mac

maclean ( ) posted Tue, 20 May 2003 at 7:48 PM

PS That's not correctly sized. I didn't use the template. Just slapped the map on. I finesse it later on. mac

OpticalSingenoid ( ) posted Tue, 20 May 2003 at 7:52 PM

LOL!! Sorry but that "Blonde" line kinda snuk up on me! :-) Nice! Your Project is coming along well!! What? You're not modeling all the intricate wire mesh of the screens? :-O What about moskitos? How are they supposed to get in now? Marco(Who had too much coffee tonight...)

maclean ( ) posted Tue, 20 May 2003 at 8:00 PM

LOL, marco. Not modelling all the mesh? I may be a glutton for punishment, but I'm not THAT crazy! The mosquitoes can always find a way in. Have you ever managed to keep them out? I haven't. Of course, if I'd wanted to make it a real New York apartment, I'd have added bars on the windows and huge bolts on the doors, and maybe a Rottweiler or two. But it's too late for that now. mac

OpticalSingenoid ( ) posted Tue, 20 May 2003 at 8:16 PM

:-)))))) You know i was kidding? Or was i? ;-) Actually, i have Bad Blood, cause they never bite me! And i spray the Frames of the Doors with Lemon juice & i have Garlic Hanged too(But, that's another story...). Yeap! Lemon will kepp Bugs away! I guess were the only species weird enough to be atracted to them...(Like Cars!) Dolce Sogno! Marco

maclean ( ) posted Tue, 20 May 2003 at 8:44 PM

Sure, I knew you were kidding. And they never bite me either. Mind you, I live in the mountains 6,000 feet up so there aren't that many around. dolci sogni anche a te. mac

OpticalSingenoid ( ) posted Tue, 20 May 2003 at 9:02 PM

Grazie! 6,000 feet up? In the Himalayas?? Ok! Answer me this: Do Monks wear anything under their Robes? :-O Marco

My mom has something in her blood that mosquitos don't like and they rarely bite her. I remember being on a picnic as a child and mom called me over to watch. A mosquito was actually on her arm. It loaded up on her blood and fell over dead! I didn't inherit it though. :(

Don't sweat it maclean...we all have a blonde moment every now and then ;o)....LOL. Laurie

maclean ( ) posted Wed, 21 May 2003 at 2:36 PM

Laurie, The blonde moments would be easier to deal with if I grew breasts as well. Then I wouldn't mind so much. LOL. It's no fun being a blonde guy... spit, My mother's the same. Mosquitoes come for miles around and queue up for their turn to munch on her. marco, Himalayas? Nope.... the italian alps. Somewhere near you, by the sound of it. mac

OpticalSingenoid ( ) posted Wed, 21 May 2003 at 7:36 PM

Not even close Mac! Wrong continent & wrong language.. Give you a Hint, we have a Grand Prix circuit on an island near a bridge, billingual city(Altough one is prominent), We have the oddest shaped Olumpic Stadium, Home to a Very Famous Singer... I picked Italian a bit from my Ex. But i don't speak it, just read it a bit... My first language is Moliere's Later! Marco

maclean ( ) posted Wed, 21 May 2003 at 8:16 PM

Well, you're not going to believe it, marco, but with all those hints..... I still have no idea where you are. 1. I know nothing about the Grand Prix, except that it bores me to death. 2. Bi-lingual? What city isn't bi-lingual these days? 3. See 1. Insert 'olympics' in place of 'Grand Prix' 4. A very famous singer? Frank Sinatra? Frank Zappa? David Bowie? Garth Brooks? I could go on forever here..... Oh well, you're not in italy, that's for sure. But with a name like marco, you'd fit right in. LOL. Try being called jimmi in italy. It comes out as 'Geemee' Say what? mac

LaurieA ( ) posted Wed, 21 May 2003 at 8:23 PM

Monaco? You speak French? I'm lousy with hints...hehehehe. Laurie

maclean ( ) posted Wed, 21 May 2003 at 8:33 PM

Nah, laurie. It has to be the states. He said 'wrong continent'. Oh wait a sec.... I bet it's Oz. Didn't Sydney have an olympic something-or-other built? Yep.... my money's on oz. (not that I have any) mac

OpticalSingenoid ( ) posted Thu, 22 May 2003 at 2:48 AM

Nope! Not an American! More hints: The Olympics were in 1976 here... Nadia Comaneshi got a Perfect score of 10 in gymnastics! We have lots of festivals like "just for laughs...", A great Jazz Festival, Excellent Food! We have four Seasons, by that i mean that summers are very Hot & that Winters are very cold & Snowy... And that "famous singer is a "She", she's known worlwide! She's our greatest export!(Even though i don't like her music) LOL I actually prefer Mylene Farmer(From France). You have more then enough to figure it out! ;-) Ah! Marco is "Short" for Marc... :-) Marco

OpticalSingenoid ( ) posted Thu, 22 May 2003 at 4:36 AM

LadyTieryn's Got it!! :-) Montreal, Quebec to be precise! And the Singer is Celine Dion! Boy! Wasn't this thread about Windows? LOL Bonne Journee a Tous! Marco

maclean ( ) posted Thu, 22 May 2003 at 3:05 PM

Celine Dion????? What about Joni Mitchell? Or even Alanis Morrisette? Heh, heh! Well, you have a lot of my countrymen/women/persons as neighbors. In fact, some of my canadian/scots relatives wanted my sister to come and work in their coffee shop. They were going to rename it 'Granny McWhirter's Scottish Tea House' or some damned thing. Need less to say, my sis ran a mile! mac
