If the eyes are black with a bit of red ambience to the pupils, that would work. Monsters are anything outside of our human limitations and traditionally referred more to distorted humanoids such as those natives shading themselves with umbrella-feet or cyclops watching their sheep. There are dozens and dozens of them in a late medieval catalog of Monsters. Critters went into the bestiaries. This is part of why I'm thinking about the draping of flesh as a suitable distortion: it is more than a paint job and is the sort of thing which we'd find repellent on sight... even without knowing his dinner habits.
