you need to read about the Setup Room and joints. the joint editor is pg 213 in the poser 5 manual. you can set limits to the joints and directions they can 'bend' etc. I haven't used it all that much, but there is a tutorial in the manual about making a character in poser and the steps to do it. I would read this section. hope that helps a bit.
