Actually... one of my ancestors.. Sir Ziggie Nice But Oft' Dim, Knight of the Polyhedral Table... was present during the attempted capture of that very Castle. Unfortunately... just after he entered the bottom of one of those 'loo-shafts' someone inside the castle decided to use the loo above. The person using the loo had severe stomach ache as they had for some inexplicable reason swallowed a gold coin the previous night whilst in a drunken state. As Sir Ziggie slowly ascended the loo-shaft a loathsome package descended at a far greater speed. In those days, things that go down where much faster than things that go up. The attempted raid on the castle was a disaster and the Knights involved retreated in disgrace, many including Sir Ziggie were covered from head to toe in excrement. Upon return to their base camp, they explained to their Commander In Chief, Sir Boris the Bold But Bad Breathed, what had occurred. As Sir Ziggie left the CIC's Command Tent, Sir Boris plucked a gold coin from his shoulder and declared, "All is not lost Sir Ziggie. At least you have this to show for your efforts!" From that day and henceforth, two new phrases entered Ye Olde Booke of English Phrases. 1. S**t on from a great height. 2. Stinking Rich. And... the expression "Gardy Loo!" was actually a misquote of an exclamation made during the thwarted raid upon the castle. The actual expression was... "Gawd it's Poooo...!"
