Subject: Where can I buy Poser 4 in Australia?

nontroppo ( ) posted Fri, 06 June 2003 at 9:37 PM · edited Sun, 01 December 2024 at 12:48 PM

Can any Aussies help me? - I can't find Poser 4 in Australia, specifically Melbourne. The software stores only seem to be selling P5, which would kill my computer, and I can't find anything online here either. Thanks.

mouser ( ) posted Fri, 06 June 2003 at 9:55 PM

I got Poser 3 and the V4 upgrade at a software shop on Elizabeth St not far from JB Hifi, sorry I cant remember the shops name (this was 4 years ago). It might be cheaper though to purchase it online from Curious Labs or Daz3D.

Sounds like the shop I tried a few weeks ago - they didn't have P4 anymore. The overseas postage from those sites is HUGE!!!!!! I don't know if that's because of tariffs or something. They charge about US$80. (And I can't get the download version because I would never manage to download the whole thing without a terrible accident.)

I hate to say this dude but at the value of the australian dollar this is probably as good as its gonna get. Note 3D World magazine issue 37 (I think) has Poser 3.0 plus Victoria 1.0 included for free.

Thanks mouser (and I'm no dude!) - that cover CD was my intro to the world of Poser. Now I want to upgrade...

I'm not sure where you could get P4 in Australia...but maybe someone In US could get copy for you..ship it out ? That might be feasible if you know anyone there ? Maybe it turn out a lil cheaper..but with AUD at 66cent to US dollar at moment, it still be pricey. But you should be able to pick up P4 cheaper now P5 released ( I'm in same boat..my creaky old system can't handle P5)

Do you know if the registration, licence, warranty and that sort of thing will work okay if I use a US version in Australia? Does anyone have experience using overseas versions here?

galactron22 ( ) posted Fri, 06 June 2003 at 11:15 PM

Actually I think that software varies by language not region, as long as you speak English you should be fine.

Ask me a question, and I'll give you an answer.

Hi, I bought my copy of Poser from Curious Labs and had it shipped out. Be aware that if its worth more than $250AU then customs will add GST which you have to pay before you can pick up the software. I would recommend finding someone with cable and a CD burner in Melbourne :)

...faith, trust and pixiedust

estherau ( ) posted Sat, 07 June 2003 at 4:42 AM

I live in queensland and I ordered it on line from curious labs. They shipped it out - but then customs held my little poser people to ransom and I had to pay 150 dollars australian to set them free, and then the fedex people lose my order. It was all horribly expensive but so worth it in the end. Poser is just so much fun I think it's silly to wait and try and get it cheaper. Just bite the bullet and get it. I love it!!!! Love Esther

I don't know about over there in Australia but over here in the USA we have internet cafes where you can go and have a coffee and use their high speed computers to download or surf the net. There are even computer labs that charge by the hour to use their high speed computers and their usually pretty cheep. If you can find one of these places than you can connect and download that software and save yourself a ton of Australian $$$. If you can get your hands on a high speed computer it will take about 5 min to download!

May be worth trying Dymocks Booksellers in Melbourne. I know their main store on George Street in Sydney often has Poser 4 in the software department. There must be an equivilent main store in Melbourne. Also, take a look at the Harris Technology website under Software, then Graphics. They are at www.ht.com.au - they often have Poser listed and they will generally have better prices than Dymocks. If still no luck, try International Software Warehouse at www.iswh.com.au - again they often list Poser.

Thanks for those tips rocco - and holy SH*T, it's 700 bucks!!

Yep it's expensive alright. But you won't regret it. Just get it already hehe. Love Esther

I have found it for $449 at Dymocks ("availability to be confirmed" - doesn't sound hopeful) but it's called: POSER 4 ACAD WIN/MAC - $449.00 What does ACAD mean? Is this what I want?

estherau ( ) posted Sat, 07 June 2003 at 9:18 PM

I think that means academic version. So if you're a student or if you are a teacher you can get it at that cheaper price. Go for it if you can. Love Esther

With our dollar getting stronger, it is certainly worthwhile looking at getting Poser direct from CL. I want to weep at the prices we have to pay for software in this country - AU$733 for Poser 4 and AU$1057 for Poser 5 at the sites I listed above. Holy sh*t is right!!!!!! However, Poser 4 download version at CL is around AU$220, which is a major saving!!! It is big, around 188MB for Poser 4 itself and another 118MB for the Content CD, but if you know someone with a cable or adsl connection and a CD burner, you are in business! Unfortunately with the Academic version they will want proof that you are doing a graphics course or at a graphics school. Which is fine if you are or know someone who is.

estherau ( ) posted Sun, 08 June 2003 at 6:52 AM

I don't think it's just graphics courses. Any university course, any study at a tertiary institution will do it for you. Love Esther

Well, I am studying and it's in the department of "Media and creative studies" so maybe I'll be in luck. If they have it in stock. Thanks everyone for your suggestions - you've been incredibly helpful.

InfoCentral ( ) posted Sun, 08 June 2003 at 10:15 AM

It just occured to me. Is it that you don't have a CD burner that worries you? If you have an internet connection then pay CL for the download. Connect to your ISP and start the download process. Wake up in the morning and your download should be complete. Then do the same thing for the Content CD. Then get the Pro Pack and do it all over again. Sure it will take some time but heck its do able - no problem!

nontroppo ( ) posted Sun, 08 June 2003 at 10:20 AM

InfoCentral, my connection just isn't stable enough to do such a large download. I do have a burner but I think I might try to find someone else who has broadband + burner. Ah, so many options, so little patience...

InfoCentral ( ) posted Sun, 08 June 2003 at 11:56 AM

I don't know what software your using but stupid (but very cheep) ISP only allows me 1 hour sessions and 2 hours nights and weekends and then drops carrier. I then have to re-connect. I can re-connect as ofter as I want. Many times while downloading large files I encounter dropped carrier. I just re-connect and the download starts right where I left off. I don't have to start all over again. Do you?

rocco_9 ( ) posted Sun, 08 June 2003 at 5:26 PM

"Ah, so many options, so little patience..." - welcome to the wonderfull world of Poser!!!

nontroppo ( ) posted Sun, 08 June 2003 at 6:51 PM

Infocentral - yes I have to start again, but I know there's free software you can get to make it possible to keep downloading after a cut connection. Thanks, rocco. Where did my life go?

rocco_9 ( ) posted Mon, 09 June 2003 at 4:55 AM

Wait until you discover the Millenium figures, then there is the clothes, the hair, the amazing textures and don't forget the wonderfull sets, buildings, locations all available for Poser... I love Poser, it definitely gets in your blood and once hooked, there is no return... yee haa!!! If you want to try a download manager, go to www.download.com and head to 'Internet' then 'Download Managers'. Browse for "Get Right 5.01" and read the description and user comments to see if this is for you - this program allows you to resume downloading if your connection is reset and apparently speeds up your download etc. I don't use this myself, as I have an adsl connection, but I have certainly heard of it over the years I have been trolling the internet. As you will see from the user comments, some people hate it, others love it. Give it a go yourself and see if it works on your downloads - try some smaller downloads than Poser first though. If it doesn't work, you can always just uninstall!
