Someone posted this in the Mac forum, but I thought I'd repost it here for your amusement. I will remain tight lipped on my feelings for Corel over their handling of Bryce 5, let alone dumping it's longest user base, but after reading the interview, their corporate 'style' is clearly evident, and the interviewee (if not actually an android) should probably be in politics! :)

I' a mac user.. but I will turn to PC only for the joy of continuing to "play" with one of my favorite programm : Bryce!. There is no end or death for a tool such as Bryce.. the end is only comming from the short-minded users. ( sorry my language is not as improved as my Bryce skill level LOL ) Best Regards Pidjy

Joke of the day: Question: "Has Corel considered selling the code base or making it open-source?" The answer: "No, as we're still very active with the product especially at retail sales outlets." With the sales, yes. With the software...yeah, right...

I actually thought as I read more of it, that the whole thing was a wind up or joke, but sadly, I think it wasn't! :)

As far as I am concerned, Corel's discontinuation of Macintosh development for Bryce is synonymous with Corel dropping Macintosh support and development entirely. Hey, Corel. You know that free copy of Painter, KPT, and Knockout you sent to me and 999 other Mac users? You know the revenue you expected to get from me, when I upgrade those programs? Guess what. Forget it. Remember this? "We bought MetaCreations Painter, KPT and Bryce, and before that KnockOut, because we really want to commit to Macintosh." I do.

Stephen Ray ( ) posted Fri, 06 June 2003 at 11:47 AM

Q: "Why is the product being discontinued ( for Mac )?" A: Because 75 to 80 percent of the world population uses windows, and 10 to 15 percent use mac...were just not making any money off them. Q: "What about ongoing support for current customers?" A: Since we never answer any of our support emails anyway... what's the big deal Q: "Does this affect other Mac products?" A: Depends on how much money were making off them. Q: "What percentage of Mac sales does the company see?" A: We don't specifically break down sales of our product, we just want everybody to switch to the Windows platform. Q: "Have you considered selling the code base or making it open-source?" A: Depends on how much money we can make off it. Q: "Are you working on competitive or side-upgrades for its customers?" A: We just lowered the price and put it in a new box, hopping everybody will think it's an upgrade and buy it. Q: "Will the company provide bug fixes for the near future? A: We put out a patch a year and a half ago, what more do you want. Q: "Customers may not be interested in purchasing a "dead" end product--especially one that may break with upcoming Mac OS X update code-named Panther (expected in September)." A: I can't elaborate any further ... because we have either fired, laid off, or move the entire team for that software, to other departments. Q: "What specially are the challenges to maintaining a cross-platform application? Is the development, customer support, or quality assurance? Did Apple's recent transition to Mac OS X, a Unix-based system, cause problems (e.g., increase costs or lengthen development cycles) for the product?" A: Redundant question, we're only making money on the Windows side....maybe all you people can switch to PCs. Q: "Can we expect Mac updates for other products soon?" Depends on weather we stay in business or not, and how much money we can make off it.

I popped in to vent about this interview too.

I'm stunned at the "dumbassity" of this statement:

"We don't specifically break down sales of our product on Mac vs. Windows platforms, as many of our products are hybrid releases. Through our research we have found that sales for Corel Bryce 5 are strongest with Windows customers, particularly at retail."

Correct me if I'm wrong, but if Corel doesn't break it down into Mac vs Windows, then how would they know which sells better?

Screw Corel. Gimme Bryce, or watch the Mac community (concentrated with creative types) move on to the competition.

scotttucker3d ( ) posted Fri, 06 June 2003 at 2:25 PM

LOL - dumbassity - I like that! What more is there to say? That statement shows they are making it all up. I beta tested bryce 2 - 4.x and I know for a fact Meta had no real sales figures on the program. So ... I doubt Corel had anything close to accurate sales figures in the first place - and as johnpenn just showed us in that statement - it is all fabricated!!! Good God Corel - at least go out with some dignity... Sheeesh... Scott

scotttucker3d ( ) posted Fri, 06 June 2003 at 2:33 PM

This statement rreally sums up 'dumbassity: ' Ms. Dundas: "The decision to only continue supporting Bryce 5 for Windows in the retail market was based on a sales and marketing decision, it wasn't related to development of the product. We are still maintaining the cross-platform application, but we are focusing our marketing efforts on the Windows product, as that's where the most sales are: in retail. As I mentioned customers can still purchase the product directly from the Corel sales department." LOL - the code will still be multi-platform but ONLY be sold to Windows customers - WHAT!!!!??? That pretty much tells you that Bryce5 in its shiny new box is the endgame. If I indeed had a plan to only market to windows customers I would at least re-write the code to run on Windows only and code for the strengths of that OS. Wow - these people are just loony. Scott

Quote: Ms. Dundas: "I don't have any information about any updates planned at the moment...there are currently no updates in the pipeline at the moment." So, she does have information then? I... see... Ms Dumbass went on to say "Yes, we will be releasing Bryce 6 although we will not be releasing Bryce 6, and we will continue to develop the product without actually developing the product in any way," Then she attempted to convince the interviewer that black was white and disappeared up her own arse.

That last bit I made up ;) but it's about as logical as the rest.

(grins!) Stephen Ray, you are a RIOT! As for Corel, aren't they based in USA? What did we all expect? Cash moves everything around us. I'm in NO way supporting the greed that is driving this program into some kind of dramatic Corel vs. the 3D World sitcom. There is a big difference between greed and ambition! Infernal machines. I am very adamantly PC, and by PC what I really mean is AMD at this point. Render times are what's important, since Bryce is nearly the same on Mac or PC. I dislike Microsoft's software in the extreme, almost as much as I dislike ridiculously overpriced shiny / transparent PC's. This goes for ANY pre-built, 500%-plus profit machines, from Apple OR Alienware or whoever. I can build a better machine in minutes for 1/10th the cost, and so can all of you. But, unlike Corel, I have no desire to alienate myself from artists all over the world. Let Corel burn in their own mess. They aren't gonna stop me from making new art, not for longer than the time it takes to pop in here and slander them a bit! (smirks) Have fun rendering!

Spiritbro77 ( ) posted Fri, 06 June 2003 at 8:11 PM

Well the argument about Mac aside, If I owned Corel, come Monday morning this woman would be fired. Matter of fact my response to her would be this "you are sooooooo fucking fired, it is unbelievable" Curious Labs wouldnt be stupid enough to have this dimwit as their mouthpiece and they've had some real winners. Where did they dig this twit up?

Eugenius ( ) posted Sat, 07 June 2003 at 3:08 AM

"When I think Corel, I think Dumbassity". Johnpenn, you crack me up! I wonder if anyone at Vector Capital actually read this interview. Q: "What about ongoing support for current customers?" A: Since we never answer any of our support emails anyway... what's the big deal. Stephen, you couldn't say it any better. All I want to say is that things are now going get a lot more interesting.

It seems that my bad hunch about Corel was correct last year. Everything seems to be going to hell ever since Microsoft made that deal with them. I guess the dream of running Bryce 7 Pro on Linux by now is all washed up.

shadowdragonlord ( ) posted Sat, 07 June 2003 at 11:12 PM

(grins at Kromekat) I accept your challenge NOT to fight! I have every OS, from Win95 to XP to Linux, from OS/2 to OSX. Note that earlier in my last post I slandered Microsoft MORE than I slandered your fruit-based PC. Keep your friends close, and your enemies closer... (smirks)

jelisa ( ) posted Sun, 08 June 2003 at 2:04 PM

shadowdragonlord, Corel is not based in the U.S., it is based in Canada.

shadowdragonlord ( ) posted Sun, 08 June 2003 at 2:45 PM

Aye, thanks Jelisa, I think I remember someone saying that, I didn't mean to slander the USA out-of-hand. But it's soooo fun! Can we just pretend they are Americans? Between you and me?

jelisa ( ) posted Sun, 08 June 2003 at 4:26 PM

A lot of Americans I know, myself included, take the way others see us with a grain of salt. Unfortunately, its the minority here that provide the majority of the fun at our expense. Of course, I suppose we could say that Canada is close enough to the USA to be affected ... but that might be slandering Canada ... (sigh) :P

SevenOfEleven ( ) posted Mon, 09 June 2003 at 10:39 AM

Greed is universal. You need to make money in Canada as well as anyplace else. Of course the management could be from the US. Pc users love pain, they wear their scars proudly. Mac users just turn their machines on and they work. Well most of the time. M$ is one of the biggest developers of Mac software.

I think if Corel wasn't interested to develop Bryce furhter I wish they can sell it to other company.........at least the best thing they can do. Ed
