Hi all, I started working on this model awhile ago and had set it aside for quite a bit. Yesterday I got around to applying some textures. The actual design for this ship was done by Peter Baustaedter in a digital painting he did (http://www.guerillapixel.com/pages/frameset1.htm) He does really nice work. I wanted to see if I could reproduce his airship using Carrara. I think I came pretty close, though I did take liberties with the textures. Hope you like it. And check out Peter website, lots of cool images. Cheers, Max

Hey, Max -- I just spent my entire "professional development" time for the week cruising through Peter's site. It's incredible. His illustration style is amazing, and his matte pantings are awesome. What's astonishing is how quickly he works. His stuff really reminds me of Albert Whitlock's matte paintings; representational but photographic, all at the same time. Thanks so much for turning me on to that site. That said, nice job on this model. You've definitely done a respectable job of capturing this airship. Your play with the textures is interesting; I think I like his appraoch on the zeppelins' color, but that's a matter of personal taste. I think his blimps are also a little longer and thinner than you've built them here. But that's nit-picking. I'd love to see your model in a more atmospheric setting like the canyons that Baustaedter depicts his stuff in....

Hey sfdex, His site is great isnt it? I was amazed to read it only took him a couple of days to do his airship painting. Im not embarassed to say it took me a whole lot longer than that to do my humble model. Of all the textures in there, the actual blimp textures is the one I was thinking of changing, co I cant argue with you there. As for the size, I think I did that on purpose (I did the actual modeling awhile ago , so Im not sure), I liked the look of the larger blimps (lets not go into the subconscious psychological motivation for that choice, ok? :o) ). I am working on putting the airship in a more canyon-like setting. At first I thought of just modeling an environment, but I think it would be neat to try and insert it into an actual photograph. Cheers and thanks for the comments, Max

Nice picture! One of my own set-aside projects is an airship. I've got the engines, the airbag, a cool rudder, a nice mermaid figurehead (the ship is the "Flying mermaid") but I've been stumped on the gondola. I'm having trouble creating both something I like and something I can model without a herculean effort. I might go with something like you have here except maybe more 'victorian' and with bubble windows ;-) Thanks for posting. Marc
