Click on File/Options and set both Instant draw, and Background draw to Faster (sliders) Also in here are many options to speed up your working environment, although I can't possibly go into them all, the little '?' in the lower right hand corner of the window can :) Each one of these options is useful and I use them constantly while making scenes. But great advice is to learn to use the layers as Guitta has already pointed out.
