The demos were bogus. The G5's will be fast, of that there's no doubt, but Apple apparently doesn't think that that is enough to sell them, so they went out of their way to hobble the x86 P4's so that their machine would look like it is faster. Apple's setting a lot of false expectations with those demos; they should have compared them to G4's instead, because being less fast than something as ridiculously fast as a high end P4 (and I'm not talking about clock rates here) doesn't have to be a bad thing... unless you go out of your way to set that expectation. A good rule of thumb: take the G5's clock speed, at 1000 MHz, and look at the performance of a P4 at that speed. That's about what you should expect on average from the G5... and that's hardly something to scoff at.
