I think I'll write up a tutorial on it. It's actually quite flexible. But for a quickie tut, here goes: First thing is to try and avoid textures. It can be done using textures, but the results aren't great. You have two main options on where to connect the toon node: diffuse, and alternate diffuse. Diffuse gives you results as seen in these posts, and alternate diffuse gives it more of a flat look, similar to this new z-toon craze. (I used alternate diffuse on my Link animation in freestuff) Note when using it with alternate diffuse, to make your Diffuse value 0. Second is to choose two like colors for what the surface is. Light color is going to be your main, or base color. Dark color is the color used when the model would be shaded. What I do when choosing colors is choose my light, then make the dark color the same. Then alt-click on the dark color, and move the right hand slider down a bit, roughly taking away 50 units of luminosity. (ex. original color had 100 lum, decrease so it's around 50 lum) The next part is Ink color, which you don't even really need to mess with as will be explained later... After that is spread. This is basically the shading range between the light and dark colors. 0 gives you a great anime look, as the color is either light or dark, with no shading. 1 blends both light and dark together, with barely any transition. The last part is line width, which doesn't do much. What it should do is outline the figure like the toon display mode does, but the results are pathetic. So I always just turn that sucker down to 0. I'll see about writing up a proper tutorial going more in depth, with sample images. Let me know if you need further help :)
