Well... I've been having some fun with wings3d and the demo for Rhino3d.. I modeled the hair in wings3d, then did some randomization in Rhino. Exported as an OBJ to bryce... Let's see... there are 10,000 individual strands of hair, 8 million polygons total + an obscenely complex model = bryce crying. Took 3.5 hours to render, with 2 spotlights and a negative square spot under the model. (good way to do soft shadows) I smudged them some in photoshop because of artifacts but I did not touch tha hair. This is pure bryce. pure polygons, no tricks here... Enjoy

Very nice. How big was the model?

Here's a 15 minute render, same deal only longer strands, there's only 625 of them in this image. I was also able to subdivide it as the model complexity was low enough.

i'll put the second one up in freestuff. If there's any interest I'll put the first up as well. But rar-ed at the best is still 4.9 megs...

catlin_mc ( ) posted Mon, 28 July 2003 at 5:14 PM

Oh yes Ornlu put them both up in free stuff. As yet I have no idea what I'd do with them but it looks like the sort of thing to terrorize Bryce with and possibly make some unusual images. You've got me thinking now..............8? Catlin

WOW! Sorry, let me say that again--WOW!!! Truly fantastic! Bravo!

That's cool! Lin

Now all we need is collision detection! (I tried it on Poser 5, but so far that program is just a crasher for me...)

Jaymonjay ( ) posted Mon, 28 July 2003 at 7:36 PM

You used Wings to model that hair?! Really? Holy crap. It's amazing! Um... how'd you do it?

Nukeboy ( ) posted Mon, 28 July 2003 at 7:51 PM

eeegawds! Put that on one of the poser hair "bases" and... eeegawds! Don't like .rar, tho.. maybe it doesn't like me...

If anyone is willing to host the first hair patch..I'll do it, otherwise it's just going to be the smaller one.

EricofSD ( ) posted Tue, 29 July 2003 at 12:35 AM

Makes me think the mohawk is actually of value. Think of the savings in render time!

Ornlu ( ) posted Tue, 29 July 2003 at 12:42 AM

Something between the two is what I am really going for. You can tile things like that second hair bunch to make fields or whatever you need. It's probably just better to tailor it to your own needs using much the same technique. It's all wings and rhino, I'll post a few lower poly ones tomorow when I finish modeling about 6 or so (for use however you want) Hair grass bushes etc. I'll be making them in various shapes, 3 kinds of squares for tiling, a circular sprout for patches, aglobular one for a bush or hairball, and a triangular one, for making your own combination shapes.

Cool. I have got no idea what to use them for, but it's cool. If you make them available as freebee please make it an OBP. That saves a lot of time when importing.

Ornlu I'll ask may partner if we can host your crazy wigs when I see him later. Could you IM me and let me know the size please then I'll get back to you. BTW, these are exceptionally stunning pieces you're sort of turning into a mad scientist type aren't you.........lol 8) Catlin

Ornlu ( ) posted Tue, 29 July 2003 at 8:57 AM

Catlin, I've decided to host it myself, just have to get all this sorted out.

Phantast ( ) posted Tue, 29 July 2003 at 10:08 AM

Has anyone got anywhere with Bantam 3D Hair? I bought a copy, but find it very hard to understand the documentation.

catlin_mc ( ) posted Tue, 29 July 2003 at 2:02 PM

Phantast you should just do what most folk, I think, do with Bantam grass and that is put in any old numbers and when something good appears take all the credit...........TA,DA 8) Catlin

shadowdragonlord ( ) posted Wed, 30 July 2003 at 3:16 AM

Bantam sounds pretty scientific! I've never actually gotten anywhere with that one, but I'm curious Ornlu, what did you need Wings for on this hair model? It seems like Rhino could have done it all singlehandedly... (well, of course you'd have to render it in Bryce...) Was Wings just for deformers or something?

Phantast ( ) posted Wed, 30 July 2003 at 5:24 AM

I said Bantam HAIR - it's quite different from grass. Grows on your head for a start. Different prog.

catlin_mc ( ) posted Wed, 30 July 2003 at 4:22 PM

Yes, but you can make hair like stuff with Bantam grass, not as good as Bantam hair but the grass has the advantage of being free. 8) Catlin
