Carolly: Was it ever really a nonology? Lucas came out with all that fairly soon after release, but in his book of the first film Vader and Tarkin are mocking the Emperor ("As the Emperor wills" sarkily), the intro suggests that the Emperor is not so much dark-side personified as hopelessly isolated and out of touch, and Kenobi tells Luke his father is dead, killed by Darth Vader, with an editorial comment implying this is literal truth. OK, the book was probably ghost written but it still makes me suspect the saga business was invented after the audience figures were in.
