I'm learning Photoshop and have used copyright-free photos of rock textures, made them semitransparent, desaturated the colors and then used them as randomly-textured 'grunge' layers over floor and wall textures. I erase away most of it, leaving some in corners and anywhere that surfaces would normally collect dirt.
