I think (if you're a Windows user) that a good idea is to locate the first scratch disk on a separate drive (rather than partition) to that of Windows itself. The main idea being to reduce contention between Windows' paging and PS's on the same physical device. No idea if similar performance probs exist for Mac users. Probably not ;)
