Subject: RE-INSTALLING POSER

madkat ( ) posted Tue, 19 August 2003 at 3:50 PM ยท edited Fri, 29 November 2024 at 1:09 AM

I have a major problem with my POSER 5 and hope someone might be able to help me. I can no longer open my POSER 5 program. When I click on POSER to open it I get a message back "Initialization Error Code 7". I spoke with Curious Labs and I have done what they suggested but the problem persists. I think this may be a problem on my computer and not POSER but I am not sure as this is the only program affected. I am using Windows 2000. I have just over one gigabyte of memory left. Before the problem occured I did delete some program trials I had downloaded but was no longer using or had expired to make more memory (I made back up copies and moved them to a 2nd harddrive). I have downloaded the SR3 updates as I was instructed but when I go to open them I get no response. I have inserted the original POSER CD and tried clicking on the installer and I get no response there either. I've done a "safe-boot" on the computer and still get the error message. Does anyone know if I can un-install POSER 5 and then re-install it, perhaps under my second hard drive (it has about 6 gb)? I know there are issues about installing POSER like you can't have it on 2 computers at once and I guess I have to keep it on the original computer I installed it on. I just don't want to uninstall it I find out I can't install it again and have to buy a new program or something. Thanks. MADKAT

You can reinstall it...but what I recommend.....do you have an antivirus program? It sounds like that may be the problem. We had on earlier this year, and it kept giving u the same errors on a lot of our programs. Check it out and see. Shadow

"I have inserted the original POSER CD and tried clicking on the installer and I get no response there either." I don't have P5, just P4, but it seems very strange that you can't do an over the top reinstall from the CD. Sounds to me like this is a problem with your OS. Have you tried installing a diffrent application, just to see if there is a problem with installing in general? Do you have administrator rights when you log on to 2k?

Oh my god. I downloaded a trial of Norton Anti-Virus program. I downloaded it to a folder on my second hard drive (F) called My Downloads. I went to the folder and double clicked the Anti Virus application and all but one thing in that folder vanished! The Norton Anti-Virus program never came up. And it looks like a whole bunch of other things have vanished from the F drive. A few minutes ago I had just under 6gb on the F drive and now it says I have over 26 gb free space! I looked in the Recycle Bin and it is empty. What is going on? MADKAT

it looks like you had it set to automatically delete anything that needed to be quarantined. Don't panic, because usually it makes a copied 'image' (kind of like what you do when burning a cd), and it is kept in the quarantine folder. Try running quarantine, and see what you come up with. I'm not home right now (working overnight), but I'll try to help you as much as I can....i've done that before, as well......don't feel bad! Shadow

Thanks for your response. I ran a search for a folder called Quarantine and got nothing. In fact there is no indication of the Norton Antivirus download at all. I have found a list of what looks to be the missing items from drive F under drive C's Documents and Settings/[name]/Recent. Is it possible for me to restore these things back to their original folders? What should I do? MADKAT

If they are the full files, I would simply move them back, either via the drag and drop process, or click on the "move files" command (if you're in XP....I don't remember '98....seems like a far off memory.) Hopefully this helps, Madkat! Shadow

Sounds to me like you have a serious viral infection. My advice is do not boot to your HDD, if you do you may loose more stuff. Try booting to a floppy disk, and running anti-virus software from the floppy drive, or a CD ROM drive, or get help from an expert.
