I despise painted on highlights. They look fake. Why have an ultra high-res 6000 by 6000 pixel texture made from real skin phiotographs all neatly pieced together and then ruin it by little white spots where no white spots ought to be? If the scene light is coming from the top or rear or side or anywhere other than slightly upper front deer-in-the-headlights, the rendering is going to scream fake because the highlights don't match the light source. If you can only place the lights in one spot to match the painted-on highlights, you are limiting your art to product shots. If you have to go into PhotoShop and remove all the stupid white spots from the eyes, lips, fingernails, and replace them with texture to match the rest of the body part, you might as well paint your own texture while you are at it.
