Welcome to the forum Sargon. Being new to Bryce, you're in for a fun-filled journey! I would agree that, jumping in and trying things out and experimenting with what Bryce can do is a great way to learn. Enjoy yourself. As for making realistic sparks in Bryce, one way would be to use a 2D pic of the type of sparks you're looking for with a transparency map. Or, someone else in the forum may know of a mat out there somewhere that would provide the results you're interested in. Off the top of my head, I'm not sure, but I'm sure someone will know.
